Here are some really rookie questions. Please forgive my ignorance.

ane. After you lot shoot the squirrel, how long do y'all accept until you need to gut/clean information technology? My neighbor has volunteered to co.e down and teach me the ropes of cleaning and cooking but if he is busy, how long do I have?

two. Whatever expert become to videos on YouTube for cleaning squirrel?

3. In one case you clean/ gut them, exercise you demand to cook them right away? Or tin you lot refrigerate or freeze the meat? Do you demand to practise anything to the meat in society to air-condition or freeze?

4. Can you utilize or relieve the pare or tail as a memento? What do you have to do to them in society to save them correctly?

Thanks in advance.

5. Are CCI Quiet 22's enough to bring downwardly a squirrel? Or should I pace up to the subs or standards? The placidity will, or at least in my feel, bounce off of a raccoons face up. I desire to make certain I take down the tree rats.

I've recently started skinning and gutting them in the woods while I chase. It's 100× easier when the squirrel is fresh, information technology also gives you more time to stay out and chase because the guts aren't in in that location making the meat nasty. I had one that terminal year that I shot equally soon equally the sun popped up. Stayed in the wood until about 1pm. Then drove abode and had it skinned out by around 2-ii:30. It was bad by the time I was done with it. It had a horrible stink and I had to throw it out.

Just habiliment a haversack and keep a plastic pocketbook in there to throw them in as you become. You tin also put a small soft sided cooler in there with an ice pack to deport them in (if you peel em in the wood).

This is how I do it. I take the time to throw on some nitrile gloves to relieve the stinky hands and washing. I got in the glove habit for about all game and fish cleaning.

We always kept a cooler with a purse of ice in information technology back at the car. Simply skinning them cold is harder. Yous can go away with a little more than from a spoilage standpoint when it is cool out. This time of year I wouldn't await effectually too long.

We accept frozen squirrel meat for months, and I don't observe a degradation in quality. The meat is very lean (read dry) and a fleck tough, due to their action level. Slow, moisture cooking methods are your friend. We usually fry it, but I saw a recipe for a accept on coq au vin using squirrel meat once that looked dynamite. I made a stew with squirrel meat and lentils once that was pretty decent. But squirrel gravy is Da Bomb!

Squirrel pelts, properly done are worth a buck, or even less. Not worth the trouble, unless you lot want to play with curing hides as a gateway into that hobby. The tails can be cutting off, with the base tucked in some borax to prevent rotting. I remember reading (I think in the Gadabout) that a fishing lure visitor (I think Meps) was buying tails for $.25 in credit.

Head shots keep just a smidge longer than body shots before cleaning since you lot don't screw up the guts.

I clean them on the tailgate once I get dorsum to my truck. Don't want to allow them go bad...

1. Depending on where you hit the squirrel, I would say virtually vi hrs before I would be hesitant on keeping one. I've skinned some that have been out in the dominicus for that long in a boat. Some squirrels smell worse than others depending on what they are eating i.e, soybeans.

ii. Enough of good videos on youtube and many different ways will exercise the trick. IMO ii people can without a incertitude clean them faster than 1. Hold the back legs upwardly right, cut betwixt the butt and tail, strip down an inch or two. Next make a cut along the ribcage but cutting the peel and non into the guts. After that simply get-go pulling the tail end and the dorsum legs and information technology should come up undone. Skin the hibernate off the back and forepart legs and brand a bone breaking cutting on all four legs and the neck. Next merely cut the genitals correct between the legs and splice the peel down the tum. Finally cut the ribs and pull the guts out all at once. Pretty simple in one case yous go the hang of it. I like using a bench vise when I'm alone.

3. Once gutted and washed throuroughly a few times they can sit down in the fridge for ~10 days. Periodically change the water if possible. Just like any other meat y'all tin can definitely freeze it.

4. I wouldn't advise saving the skin, simply y'all tin can definitely relieve the tail for a certain menstruum of fourth dimension. I in one case knew a child that saved every squirrel tail he could go a hold of. The tail itself was worth about 15cents to make a wing for fishing. He kept them in the freezer in a ziploc pocketbook every bit they kept better that way.

five. I believe that those bullets would be enough to have down a squirrel. Pellet guns bring them downwardly so surely those could even though I have never used them personally. The best ammo that I accept used is the 40 gr RN CCI mini mags. They shoot consistently and have aplenty knock down power.

Hopefully this can be of some help.

Good advice and then far. The video bwframe posted is the easiest style to do it. Some guys take a nail on a fence mail, simply basically you are going to "undress" the squirrel like you are taking off a t-shirt over the head, and pants off the legs. I normally clean them out within a couple hours. Partly because the unlike woods I hunt all take about ane-2 hours depending on the action (I rarely sit and wait in a spot more than possibly fifteen minutes, since there are enough of "active" squirrels that I tin can discover). So when I get back to the truck I clean them real quick, throw in a gallon plastic bag, and into a pocket-sized cooler before going to the next spot.

That guy makes it look easy, simply it does take a time or two to get information technology right. Sometimes you lot cutting likewise deep into the tail an just rip the tail off. Then you have hairy mess on your hands. Other times you don't go the skin to rip the right way and y'all don't become it to all come off. I will say that with all types of cleaning, a sharp knife makes a large departure. And really y'all don't demand a huge blade. In fact a smaller narrow blade like that guy used works better. Last year I had for some reason forgotten my small knife and used a big pocketknife that I employ for deer. That made it 10x as hard, although cutting the legs and head off were pretty quick!

Just remember...its already expressionless, so you lot won't hurt information technology! I usually go along the tails since my girl thinks they are cool. In that location isn't much there to really go bad or odour, but the hair volition eventually start to autumn off.

As far equally bullets, I'm using minimags with expert success. Squirrels really don't take much to kill them. A proficient head shot or if yous go for the shoulder typically drops them d.r.t. Sometimes they bomb a fleck when they dice, but overall it doesn't take much. Now a gut shot will not kill them right abroad and you might lose a few.

Also, remember its a lot like golf game...WATCH where the squirrel lands when it falls out of the tree. Detect a landmark or obvious feature that yous can reference. While near shots are going to be fairly close, information technology tin be hard to observe them in the undergrowth, especially this time of year. Its amazing how well they tin can hide when they aren't moving!

Indeed! I keep a half-dozen" filet knife for fish in my pack. The small, skinny bract (kept sharp!) is pretty easy to manipulate and cuts both hide and meat without much attempt. If you don't accept a hatchet or larger pocketknife for the ankles, you can suspension the bone with your hands (at the articulation.. squirrels are small simply femurs are still kinda stiff!) and piece of work information technology dorsum and forth a few times. Stick the filet pocketknife inside the joint and a quick yank should become that pesky foot off of there.

1. Got ane. Cleaned it correct away. The kids thought it was awesome.
two. The video that bwframe posted up makes it look like shooting fish in a barrel. I fought that dude. In that location was pilus everywhere.

3.he's in the fridge. :)

4.after my wrestling match, there was nothing salvageable. I need a sharper knife. That's for sure.

5. CCI Repose is enough of circular at 56 yards from inside the kitchen through an open window.

Congrats on the kill! Don't worry well-nigh the problem skinning, although that pilus is hard to get off the meet. After you practise a couple its pretty easy. What tripped yous up with information technology? My showtime one that way I didn't cut deep enough into the tail and didn't get the skin on the rump to first peeling. I pulled a lot of pilus out of the tail with my kick though. The second 1 I cut too deep and cutting the tail off, and then then had to become my thumbs in there and that usually ways a lot of hair.

Start I didn't cutting deep enough or plenty I call back. Once I cutting a little more I got it to skin up but it was still tough. To get the bottom part off I really had to go my fingers in there.

The squirrel in the motion picture appears to exist an old fox squirrel. Those are toughest of all of them. Get a couple of grays, they're usually a lot easier to peel.
